I am fascinated by the complexity found in nature – especially those systems that many people are simply unaware of. A natural system that is ever-present is that of lichen. People seldom notice the tiny organisms growing all around them, but the complexity and diversity is astounding. Lichens are not plants, but rather ‘composite organisms’ made up of fungi plus photosynthesizing algae and/ or bacteria. Decaying buildings; rocks; trees - ecologically, lichens occur throughout the world and occupy niches where nothing else will grow.
My art-making has revolved around lichen since I first became aware of the beauty of these organisms several years ago.
